Executive Officer USS Michael Murphy

Commander Turner

Commander Corey Turner graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1995 earning a B.S in Chemistry. His initial sea assignment was a split tour as Damage Control Assistant and then Assistant Operations Officer in USS MILIUS (DDG-69) homeported San Diego, California where he was part of the ship’s maiden deployment. CDR Turner’s follow on assignment was to Department Head School, in Newport, RI.

Upon completion of Department Head School, CDR Turner was assigned to Precommisioning crew in USS McCAMPBELL (DDG-85), Bath, ME built and homeported San Diego, California and served as Operations Officer during building and manning of the ship, initial Sea Qualifications and subsequent deployment work-ups for Counter Drug Operations. Commander Turner then reported to the staff of COMMANDER DESTROYER SQUADRON TWENTY-ONE as Operations/Plans Officer, completing a 3rd/7th Fleet Deployment aboard USS JOHN C STENNIS (CVN-74) in support of Operation Northern Edge, RIMPAC 2004, JASEX, and various multi National Exercises.  

CDR Turner earned his M.S. in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College, in Newport, RI. Upon graduation he remained at the college as a member of the Naval Operational Planner Course, earning a designation as a Joint Operational Planner. CDR Turner’s follow on assignment was to the staff of Commander North American Aerospace Defense Command and United States Northern Command, J-5 Plans, Policy and Strategy Directorate, in Colorado Springs, CO. Assigned as a lead strategic planner, CDR Turner conducted numerous Defense Support to Civil Authorities (DSCA) planning events, to include hurricane, wildfire and winter storm support, pandemic preparedness and Inauguration Day support.

CDR Turner then reported to the staff of Commander, Combined Maritime Forces, U.S. Naval Forces Central Command and Commander U.S. Fifth Fleet, Manama Bahrain as the Deputy Director for Plans, supporting Maritime Security Operations, Counter-Piracy operations and Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.

His personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal; Meritorious Service Medal; Navy Commendation Medal (two gold stars); Navy Achievement Medal (one gold star) and various individual and unit service ribbons.
